I inspire you to tap into your inner wisdom and take the first step toward vibrant living by developing healthy habits that fuel your energy, vitality, and well-being.
I was strong, lean and looked healthy. Between running and strength training I spent two hours a day exercising; always feeling strong and energized. Nonetheless it was not uncommon for me to feel exhausted by the middle of the day. I never really thought about this as a possible problem. Or that my excessive and obsessive drive to exercise, combined with a restrictive but what I believed healthy nutritious diet may not be optimal for my body. Even when some friends and colleagues would ask "Are you alright? Due to my weight loss" I had no idea why they were concerned. My own perception was I was super fit and healthy.
October 2012 I ran my first half marathon, 13.1 miles in one hour and fifty two minutes. The excitement and desire to just keep getting stronger further fueled my obsession. That is until I left the event..jogging back to my car. My body was exhausted, cramped and I fell hard on the asphalt. Little did I realize my world was going to change.
This was when I realized that my INTERNAL HEALTH DIDN'T MATCH MY EXTERNAL HEALTH.
My cells were in overdrive. There was inflammation throughout my body. I ignored the fatigue and cramps. My body needed a break.
It was through the experience of helping myself and all my patients and clients, that I decided to take all my knowledge and experiences to write a book.
I always loved being a speech pathologist and never imagined doing anything else - until one day in 2011, I had a vision that changed my life. At that time, I was working in a subacute rehabilitation center, helping adults recover from neurological disorders. I had worked with hundreds of patients over the years, but there was something about one man - let's call him Richard - that deeply touched my soul.
Richard has suffered a major stroke that left him unable to speak, follow simple directions, or perform any daily activities like eating, dressing, or even using the bathroom. For a week, I visited him twice a day, hoping to find him awake and alert enough for a swallowing assessment. He was being tube-fed, and though he would occasionally open his eyes, he was unable to communicate or engage.
AS I SAT WITH HIM DAY AFTER DAY, SOMETHING SHIFTED INSIDE ME.
I began to see Richard as more than a patient. I saw the life he might have led - a man who worked hard his entire life, saving and planning for the day when he and his wife could finally retire and enjoy the fruits of their labor. But years of being sedentary, poor eating habits, and stress had taken their toll. Richard developed high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes, eventually losing his right leg to the disease. His body couldn't keep up anymore, and it culminated in a massive stroke that left him with irreversible brain damage.
In that quiet room, the realization hit me: Richard didn't have to be here, not like this. His disability could have been prevented with better self-care. If he had listened to his body, prioritized his health, and made lifestyle changes years before, he and his wife could have had the retirement they dreamed of.
I realized I could no longer be content helping people only after they acquired disabilities. My heart pulled me in a new direction -toward prevention, toward empowering people to take care of their health before it's too late.
That moment with Richard sparked a transition that has taken more than a decade, but today I stand here as The Vibrant Sage.
MY MISSION IS CLEAR:
to change the lives of at least 10,000 adults by helping them embrace healthier lifestyles, connect with their bodies, and make choices that serve their unique needs - physically, mentally, and spiritually.
Thank you, Richard, for being my inspiration. Because of you, I now dedicate myself to empowering others to live vibrantly and fully, every single day.
